The Downeast Salmon Federation commissioned a visualization study to reimagine the 100+ year-old Machias Dike as a bridge. The design focused on restoring historic fish passage beneath the bridge, enabling the potential for the largest saltwater marsh restoration in the Gulf of Maine while reconnecting ancient fish spawning grounds to the ocean. The proposed bridge also includes space for commercial vendors, creating a unique setting for the culturally significant practice of selling antiques, gently used goods, and produce during the summer months. To soften the bridge's scale, a wide strip of greenery was incorporated, providing a buffer between traffic and the Sunrise Trail, which spans the current marsh. Additionally, a fishing and overlook platform facing the bay is included as an amenity, enhancing the visitor experience while contributing to the infrastructure’s overall function.
